Research visit at Cardiff University
March/April - Kristin Nicolaus will be a guest scholar at Cardiff University.
During her two-month stay, she plans to establish contact with individuals and organizations working in the subject area of Payments for Ecosystem Services. Through this she hopes to identify case studies for the project as a whole. Where her work is concerned, the research visit should expand the comparative perspective between Germany and Great Britain. She will also continue to support the team in the organisation of the joint symposium “Towards the Environmental Big Society” in Cardiff.

Scientific exchange with the University of Southern California
February/March - Thomas Krikser has been invited to visit the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He will work together with Prof. Elizabeth Graddy and other scholars at the “School of Policy, Planning and Development” on the influence of civil society engagement on sustainable development.

Civiland online survey concluded
Early January 2011 - The online survey in Germany, the US, UK and Wales had come to an end. First results will soon be presented here.

Interviews with German community foundations
October/November 2010 - In October and November of 2010, Thomas Krikser conducted interviews with German community foundations to identify challenges they faced, as well as their structures in the initial phases of these foundations. This will be followed by interviews with American community foundations early in 2011. The goal here is to analyze the different approaches and cultural characteristics in a bi-national comparison.

CIVILand’s Online Survey was successfully launched.
22 October 2010 –CIVILand launched its multiple country online survey. Non-profit organizations in the US, UK, Germany and Switzerland were invited to participate. The focus of the survey is on non-profit organizations’ engagement in environmental policies. The online survey will run until the middle of December.

Interviews with US federal environmental and agricultural authorities
Bettina Matzdorf and Claas Meyer were in Washington DC from 11.10.2010-16.10.2010 conducting interviews with representatives of US federal environmental and agricultural authorities. The focus of the interviews was on the dissemination of the ecosystem service concept in the American laws and the some state initiated PES concepts in the US.

Questionnaire Pre-testing Phase
The pre-testing phase of our questionnaire came to a successful close. Many thanks to our pre-testers for their productive and insightful suggestions and comments.

In February 2010 our PhD candidates submitted the exposés for their PhD-theses to the PhD commission of ZALF.

CIVILand Kick-Off-Meeting: 21st and 22nd September 2009 CIVILand Team meets with their cooperation partners for the first time to discuss research perspectives together.
