    Expert workshop organized by the CIVILand-Team, Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), with support from GUND Institute, Institute for Ecological Economics, University of Vermont
    The workshop will bring together state and private sectors to compare their perspectives and to identify enabling conditions for establishing and maintaining effective PES schemes.

    This international conference on Payments for Ecosystem Services was organised by the CIVILand team. Some CIVILand research results were presented during this event. Bettina Matzdorf gave a presentation titled “The Relevance and Role of Civil Society in PES Schemes - A Case Study Analysis of PES schemes in Germany and the U.S.”. Claudia Sattler’s presentation was on the research topic "Multi-Classification of Payments for Ecosystem Services”.

    Jens Jetzkowitz attended the annual conference organized by the European Sociological Association in Geneva. He presented the preliminary research results of subproject 2 and chaired a session on environmental justice at this conference.

    Claudia Sattler attended the ISSRM symposium in Madison, Wisconsin, where she gave a lecture titled “Civil Society as a Steward for the Provisioning of Ecosystem Services”.
  • 25 - 27 May 2011Training Course at ZALF
    Claas Meyer, Kristin Nicolaus and Sarah Schomers attended the training course "How to publish in peer reviewed journals" at ZALF. The course explained in an effective and structured manner, ways to successfully publish in international journals. Apart from the helpful tips to structure and style scientific articles, the introduction of publishers’ and editors’ views on the publishing process was of particular interest.

    This symposium at Cardiff University was organized by the CIVILand team. All members of the CIVILand team participated in this event. Kristin Nicolaus and Thomas Krikser both presented some of their research findings in relation to the symposium’s focus.

    During her research visit at Cardiff University, Kristin Nicholas gave a presentation titled “Participation in the designing of payments for ecosystem services (PES): A comparison of PES design processes in Germany and Great Britain” on the PhD Away Day at the Cardiff School of City and Regional Planning.

    Claas Meyer participated in the IASC annual conference, where Andreas Thiel presented their joint paper. The paper is titled “Institutional change in water management cooperation: implementing the European Water Framework Directive in the Eastern German Odra basin”.

  • 13 -16 December 2010Payments for Ecosystem Services – Towards an Implementation Strategy
    Sarah Schomers participated in the international workshop that was hosted by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the CBD Secretariat, the Institute for Environmental Economics and World Trade (IUW) at the university of Hanover and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). She presented the research concept of CIVILand.
  • 17 – 20 November 2010ARNOVA 2010 Conference: Governments and the Voluntary Sector: Redefining the Relationships? Washington D.C., USA.
    Thomas attended the Arnova 2010 Conference in Washington, D.C., where he presented a poster titled Development and Professionalization. The early Stages of Community Foundations in Germany.
  • 04 -13 October 2010 Claas Meyer took part in the Marie Curie Training Course.
  • 18 – 21 September 2010 Technical Specialized Meeting between Brazil and European Union on Environmental Research – Towards a New Perspective of Bilateral Cooperation between Brazil and the European Union in Environmental Research “Amazon Forest and Sustainable Development” in Manaus, Brazil.
    Bettina Matzdorf was invited as a scientific expert to take part in discussions on environmental research in the parallel sessions of this meeting. She also gave a presentation to introduce CIVILand’s research work.
  • 17 September 2010 Sarah Schomers took part in the Uni-Park networking meeting at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich.
  • 16 -18 September 2010 7th Meeting of the Junior Scholars of Environmental Sociology (NGU) in Freiburg to the topic of “Decisions with environmental impacts between freedom and coercion
    Kristin Nicolaus participated in the 7th Meeting of the Junior Scholars of Environmental Sociology (NGU) in Freiburg, where she presented the theoretical approach of her thesis in a discussion.
    The event was opened with a lecture by Karl-Werner Brand, who is engaged in the framework of individual and social decisions that have environmental implications. Scientists and scholars working with an environmental focus from various institutions in Germany presented their research work and discussed methods in environmental social sciences.

  • 5 -11 September 2010 World Water Week 2010 in Stockholm, Sweden.
    Claas Meyer participated in the World Water Week 2010 as a junior rapporteur. As a junior rapporteur, Claas worked with one of the four Rapporteur Teams under the topic of “Balancing competing demands”. The Rapporteur Teams presented their findings and engaged the audience in an interactive moderated discussion during the “Reporting Back” segment at the Closing Plenary.   • 7- 8 July 2010 Coaching on “Participation Research”
    On July 7 & 8, one of the junior research groups of the Social Ecological Research programme Besatzfisch organized some coaching on "Participatory Research". In attendance were two of our team members, Sarah Schomers and Kristin Nicolaus. The coaching was led by Dr. Olivier Barreteau of Cemagref (Research Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technologies, France).

    Jens Jetzkowitz and Bettina Matzdorf participated in the workshop in Bad Salzau in June 2010. Both Jens und Bettina held lectures at this workshop. Bettina and Professor Klaus Müller were also session leaders at this workshop.

    Bettina Matzdorf participated in the expert workshop organised by BfN(Federal Agency for Nature Conservation), Bonn, UBA, Vienna and BAFU, Switzerland in Vilm. She also gave a presentation titled: “Konzept zur Bewertung der Ökosystemdienstleistungen von ‘High-Nature-Value’ Grünland”( Approach to assessing the ecosystem services of 'High-Nature-Value' grassland).

    Claudia Sattler gave a presentation at the workshop in KIT – Karlsruher Institute for Technology in December 2009. The title of the presentation was „Anforderungen an die Modellierung durch Multifunktionalität und Vielfalt der Zukunftsoptionen“ (Requirements for modelling under multi-functionality and the diversity of future options).
